AB-730 vs AB-731: Which Microsoft AI Certification Is Right for You?

Microsoft introduced two certification tracks aimed squarely at business users rather than developers: Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional (exam AB-730) and Microsoft Certified: AI Transformation Leader (exam AB-731). Both sit outside the traditional Azure technical certifications, and both are built around Microsoft 365 Copilot and the wider generative AI toolset — but they are written for different jobs, and mixing them up leads people to book the wrong training.

What AB-730 covers

AB-730 is aimed at any employee who uses, or is about to use, Microsoft 365 Copilot day to day. It tests practical fluency: writing effective prompts, understanding what Copilot can and cannot see in your tenant, using Copilot's agents such as Researcher and Analyst, and applying responsible AI principles when reviewing its output. There is no coding involved and no assumption of a technical background — it is designed for the same audience as the software itself, which is to say, most of the workforce.

What AB-731 covers

AB-731 sits a level up. It is aimed at people who need to make the business case for generative AI, decide where it fits across existing processes, and lead a rollout responsibly — typically transformation leads, IT managers, department heads or programme owners. Rather than testing prompting skill, it tests judgement: mapping Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio and Foundry Tools to real business processes, thinking through governance and data risk, and planning adoption so a rollout actually sticks rather than stalling after the pilot.

Choosing between them

• If your job is to use Copilot inside your own documents, spreadsheets and inbox — AB-730 is the relevant one.
• If your job is to decide how Copilot gets rolled out, governed and adopted across a team or organisation — AB-731 is the relevant one.
• They are not sequential or dependent on each other. A transformation lead who also wants day-to-day fluency can reasonably do both.

Sitting the exam

One accuracy point worth being explicit about: the Cloudpilar course fee covers the training day itself, not the Microsoft certification exam. The AB-730 and AB-731 exam fees are paid separately, directly to Microsoft, when you come to sit the exam. Budget for the course and the exam fee as two separate line items rather than assuming one covers the other.

If you are still unsure which track fits your role, the honest test is what you will do with the certification the day after you pass it. If the answer is "use Copilot better in my own work," that is AB-730. If the answer is "decide how my team or organisation adopts this," that is AB-731.
